What the heck is POEMTURA !?

It is a name that I coined, by combining two Spanish words, namely POEMA (which means ‘poem‘) and PINTURA  (which means ‘painting‘), to indicate a work in which I combine a drawing or painting with a poem, both describing an object or a topic of interest.

I chose ‘birds’ as my first theme for my series of Poemturas, as I have always been fascinated by birds and interested in them, but think I do not know much about them. By drawing, painting and creating limericks or poetry on different types of birds and bird species, I hope to learn more about them in an interesting way. My inspiration to do this comes from my son Anirudh who was, from childhood, very fascinated by birds (and animals and nature in general), and constantly was amazed by them, sketched them, and talked about them. Above are a few of his sketches, all done when he was between 6 and 9 years.

His interest and amazement about nature made me think that perhaps learning and teaching about nature could be done in an artistic as well as scientific way. POEMTURA is my humble attempt to do so. I hope to post more of my poemtura in the months and years to come to complete a number of bird species, and even other types of animals in the future.
