POEM: A dog´s dream

Ranganatha Sitaram

How she sleeps!

With her droopy ears

Floppy on her side.

Her golden white fur

Silky smooth over her chest.

Her large paws entwined

As a coherent bond

Of chemistry

That she doesn’t care.

Her undulating breath

Rising and falling in synchrony

With her shapely chest.

A big baby

In peace with herself.

.

Now then,

The calm is broken

By a sudden stimulated sprint.

The paws are at once active,

In a bounding motion

That the big girl dreams.

Here you hear her woof-woof

From that growling snout.

The fur on the spine

Is erect like the swinging bridge

She likes to walk on,

On her daily evening out.

What has she seen,

I wonder,

In her mind´s eye?

.

A snotty cat?

A slithering reptile?

Or is it that flighty bird

She daily encounters

On the terrace?

Is she chasing them away?

Or joining them in some

Unknown frolic?

How can we fathom

The complex mind

Of an unassuming dog?

Do we understand its

Deepest feelings or

Its unexpressed thoughts?

Only then shall we realize

The complacent arrogance

Of us, its ignorant masters.
